Ever hear the story behind the video for The Golden State? This is the first video we did for Ad Astra Per Aspera and we actually shot this video before the record was even finished in the summer of 2010. I did my best to lip sync to a song we hadn’t even tracked vocals for yet! That’s our good friend Christie following me around in the white dress. The fire scenes were actually shot in Cedar Falls, Iowa a month before the scenes in southern California. We hiked out to an abandoned train wreck and lit some bath towels on fire with kerosene. Our friends Karl (who lives in Iowa) and Michael (who was filling in on bass for us that tour) and Hannah (Brad’s girlfriend) and Audrey (Tim’s girlfriend) were assisting us during the fire scenes… starting fires, putting them out, playing the ipod, and watching out for cops/coyotes/ghosts. I wasn’t worried about catching on fire… but I was worried for Brad’s hair!
My favorite parts were the time we spent on Long Beach at sunset and the afternoon we spent milling around the Griffith Observatory.
There have been some “interesting” (to say the least) interpretations of this song. Instead of spilling the beans right way, I’d like to hear your thoughts. What do you think this song and video are all about?
This video was directed and shot by our best bud Tim Dodd. He’s the man. Check out his work on Facebook HERE
